ARCTIC, coproduced by Iceland's Pegasus Pictures, selected for Cannes
Arctic, a new American drama coproduced by Lilja Ósk Snorradóttir, Snorri Thórisson, and Einar Sveinn Thórdarson for Icelandic production company Pegasus Pictures, has been selected for the Cannes Film Festival's Midnight Screenings section, which is part of the festival's official selection. The film was shot in Iceland and features key contributions by Icelandic talent, including director of photography Tómas Örn Tómasson and actress María Thelma Smáradóttir.
Arctic is about a man who is stranded in the Arctic and awaiting rescue. After a tragic accident the opportunity for rescue is lost, and the man must decide whether to remain in the relative safety of his camp or embark on a deadly trek through the unknown in order to save himself.
Arctic was directed by Joe Penna and written by Penna and Ryan Morrison. It stars Mads Mikkelsen, with María Thelma Smáradóttir in a supporting role. The film was shot by Tómas Örn Tómasson, edited by Ryan Morrison, and the score was compsed by Joseph Trapanese. It was produced by Christoper Lemole and Tim Zajaros for Armory Films, and Noah C. Haeussner for the Union Entertainment Group, and coproduced by Lilja Ósk Snorradóttir, Snorri Thórisson, and Einar Sveinn Thórdarson for Pegasus Pictures. Einar Thorsteinsson is one of the film's executive producers. Many other Icelanders pariticipated in the production, including sound mixer Árni Gústafsson, makeup designer Ragna Fossberg, costume designer Margrét Einarsdóttir, production designers Atli Geir Grétarsson and Gunnar Pálsson and production manager Beggi Jónsson.
Since Arctic was shot in Iceland, it received a 25% reimbursement of production costs through Iceland's reimbursement scheme.
